# 2960  2019 Season Wrap Up

Batavia joined with both Attica and Notre Dame (to form what we canlled BAND) and otherwise the teams remained the same with thirty-five playing in Section Five this year. There were 1,129 players on the rosters at the during of the season and 914 on the final rosters. Fairport carried the largest roster with forty-one players and Spencerport had the smallest with sixteen.

For the seventh time and after a brief absence, Section Five Lacrosse leadership has selected first, second and honorable mention lists of All-Section players. The 2019 first team lists fifteen players and includes the six All-Americans previously announced."It`s always difficult to choose from so many talented players," said Section Five Chairman, Mike Simon.

# 2941  East Aurora Wins First NYS Tournament Game in School History

After winning their first Sectional Title in school history, East Aurora can now add their first NYS Tournament win to their list of achievements.  East Aurora fought back from a 4-0 deficit to defeat Geneva 8-6.  The Blue Devils scored 7 of the last 8 goals to secure the victory.  They held the Panthers scoreless for 21 minutes spanning the second, third and fourth quarters.  The Blue Devils were led in scoring by Drew Kenney with 4a.  Jack Rogers was the only other Blue Devil to score more than one point (2g).  Geneva goalie Brandon Wayne finished with 11 saves in the contest, including six in the final quarter.

The All Tournament Teams for 2018 were announced at each final on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Most Valuable Player in Class A was Colin Peers (Fairport), in Class C, Sam Miller (Geneva), in Class D, Connor Fingar (Penn Yan) and in Class B, Jack LaRue (Victor). Players were selected on the basis of their performances in the Section Five Tournaments.

Tuesday: DAY IN REVIEW: Geneva won their second back to back Class C Championship tonight against Wayne 10-1. The Panthers defeated the Eagles 13-2 last year. The Panthers were slowly plodding throughout the contest and added a few goals in each quarter. Midfielder Sam Miller was named the Class C All Tournament MVP after a 3g-3a day (60% of all goals). Additionally, goalie Brandon Wayne finished with an exceptional day, recording 13 saves. Of those, 10 came in the first half while holding the Eagles scoreless during that period. Friday: DAY IN REVIEW: Both Class A and Class C played their semifinal games today and once, again, three out of four top seeded teams won. Hilton, the number three seed won their trip to the Cgampionships with and exciting overtime win against Pittsford, the number two seed, It is the first time the the Cadets have made the finals.

# 2876  Many Mismatches Today, and Hilton Takes Out Fairport

Thursday: DAY IN REVIEW: There were fourteen games played today and most were mismatches. Of the rest, Hilton, for the first time in program history, beat Fairport 9-8, despite a last quarter surge by the Red Raiders. The Cadets led 4-3 at the half and then scored five goals in the third to end the quarter up 9-4. The offense of Hilton was spread between eight players with Matthews Mojsej leading with 1g-2a. Ben Metrano, Brenden Howell and Michael Galante each added two goals while Clayton Duford recorded 9s (53%) for Hilton (8-3). Klay Stuvert and Colin Peers each had 3g-2 for Faiport (8-2)

# 2848  Finally Some Close Games

Saturday: DAY IN REVIEW: After a number of days full of mismatches, a number of the six games played today were close ones. Penn Yan overcame a 7-3 defecit and scored six goals to force a tied with Canandaigua, who won in the first overtime period. Geneva played a close game with Greece, winning 10-6 after multiple late goals by Sam Miller. West Genesee was an 11-8 winner against Hilton and Pittsford lost an 8-7 game with G-M. Finally, Wayne was a 10-8 winner over Aquinas and, by the way, Victor posted a 17-2 win over Kettle Moraine (Wisconsin).

Tuesday: DAY IN REVIEW: There were two games scheduled and only one and a half played today. At Canandaigua Academy, the Braves went right to work, outscoring the Panthers 5-1 in the first and 7-3 in the second quarter. After that, Geneva was held scoreless in the second half while Canandaigua added six more. Nine players made the Braves offensive list which ws led by Tyler Goode (3g-2a) and Mark Belles (2g-3a). Matt Bierhile won 14 of 19 face-offs and Aiden Kenyon made five saves (63%). Sam Miller led the Panther scoring with 2g. Canandaigua (6-1) will play Thomas on Thursday. Geneva (5-2) will play Greece on Saturday.

Tuesday: DAY IN REVIEW: Eight games were played under cloudless skies, yet cold conditions an there were a mixture of close games and runaways. Coach Brian Travis reports that after taking a lead in the first half, Geneva say their hosts at Corning score five goals in the last quarter. Nick Askin score one of his three goals to send the game into overtime, where Sam Miller (3g-3a) scored the game winner for the Panthers.

There were no upsets in the Section Five tournaments in the out bracket rounds as the higher seeded teams won in each case. Mynderse had a close one with Livonia, winning 10-9 in overtime.

In a game that see-sawed back and forth, Thomas scored the winning goal in overtime to defeat Pittsford 12-11. On the other end of town Penfield defeated Schroeder by a goal in the last minute of the game.

There were sixteen games played today as the regular season is starting to wind down. Pittsford came from behind to beat host Corning 8-7 in the closest game of the day. Thomas took Irondequoit by two (12-10) and Gananda beat Mynderse 11-8.

Five games were played on Monday. Avon beat Batavia 8-4 and Wayne beat the Thunder 12-7. Other winners were Pal-Mac over Geneva. Brockport over Newark and Canandaigua over McQuaid Jesuit.

After a 6-4 half, Wayne and Pal-Mac traded goals in the second half and the Eagle took a 7-5 win aft home. Other winners on Friday night were Mynderse, Gananda and Geneva.

After a close game throughout, the Saints took control at the end of the game and defeated Hilton at the very end of the first overtime period. Pittsford remained undefeated with an 11-7 win over Cazenovia.

Irondequoit has a 15-9 win over visiting Ithaca while Livonia used a last minute flurry to take Rush-Henrietta in overtime. Waterloo and Midlakes played a close game, but the Indians held on to their one goal lead for the win.

Section Five lacrosse saw some changes in teams as Greece combined four schools into the Greece Storm and Livonia joined with Avon to form the Lakers. The Rochester city schools combined to form East United. With the changes and combinations, there were thirty-five teams and 942 players. Fairport carried the largest roster with forty players and Batavia had the smallest with sixteen.

The Championship round in Classes A and C are now set with #2 Penfield playing #1 Fairport in Class A. In Class C, #2 Wayne will play #1 Geneva. The games will be played at St. John Fisher College on Tuesday, May 29th with the Class C game at 5:00 and the Class A game at 7:30.

Tuesday: DAY IN REVIEW: With a 13-9 win over Aquinas, McQuaid Jesuit (12-3) won the GRALL Championship tonight. Aquinas took an early lead, but the Knights came back to a 3-3 tie by then end of the first quarter and then never lost the lead. Ryan McEvily led with 4g-1a and Jack Bilitier added 3g. Jon Gaglio made 12 saves for McQuaid Jesuit including 7 in the second Quarter. McQuaid Jesuit ends the regular season with a 12-3 record.

It is hard to imagine, but we are entering the final week of regular season games. The last games will be played on Friday and the tournaments will begin on May 21st. Two hundred and forty-seven games have been played thus far. Sixty-four (of seventy-three out of Section games scheduled) have been played. Section five teams have won forty-five (70%). Victor, Thomas, HF-L, Gananda and McQuaid Jesuit continue at the top of their leagues.

Thursday: DAY IN REVIEW: In the closet game of the night, Schroeder defeated Irondequoit 11-10. This is the third overtime game of the season for the Eagles (and the first that they have lost). AJ Fiorio scored his second goal of the game with 2:49 remaining in overtime with a feed from Connor Ball to give the Warriors the win.

The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle announced their 2017 All-Greater Rochester Lacrosse team today. The list features the top sixteen players and a number of honorable mentions were led by Canandaigua senior Attackman, Devin Andrews who was named "Player of the Year". Andrews, who was also a US Lacrosse All-American, scored 72 goals and 47 assists this year. The SportsFive Offensive Player of the Year plans to study and play at Stony Brook next year.

Webster Thomas took their first lead with an overtime goal from Colin Horan in the second overtime period to defeat Penn Yan 9-8. The Mustangs led for major portions of the game and had a three goal lead with 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Thomas scored the final four goals of the match-up to force overtime and take the win.

Canandaigua attackman Devin Andrews scored 7g-2a for the Braves (11-4) when they beat Penfield (6-7) at home tonight. Joe post was 21-26 at the draw and added 11 ground balls for CA. Geneva (8-4) held Penn Yan (6-7) scoreless in the second half in their 5-1 victory this afternoon. Geneva goalie Jacob Drennen recorded 24 saves for an amazing 96% while Sam Miller led the offense with 1g-3a.

# 658  Sweetlax Freshman Take Inside Lacrosse Invitational

The Sweetlax Lacrosse Club sent a rising freshman team to the Inside Lacrosse Invitational Recruiting Tournament where they went 6-0 and took first place. The tournament, held at Goucher College (Baltimore, MD), was held from July 20-22. Sweetlax outscored opponents 75-25, allowed no more than seven goals against. The closed game, against FLG 2019 was 9-5.
